Founding Pastor’s Charge to New Lead Pastors (Part 1)

The Parade of Miracles

Seventeen years ago, there was no welcoming committee, no VIPS and no congregation of thousands—just a handful of us coming to town to participate in what God was doing— and start something miraculous. (Special thanks to the Fouquiers, McKinneys, Krakers, and those who joined soon thereafter—the Adams, Ostroms, Haskins.) Few of us could have imagined and visualized a night like this and the vision we are all watching unfold. And most of us were not even there.

But this evening we all get to choose to be part of something far bigger than all of us put together. We get to choose to say “amen”. We get to choose to be part of this Church. We get the opportunity to declare a huge “yes” and to sign up for the future—knowing our best days are not behind us, but our best days are ahead of us! The Lord started a “parade of miracles” among us in 1992, (which was an amazing prophetic word by Dr. George Evans) and today we get to join together and help build more floats for the parade and become part of this next supernatural segment of our journey.

Paul Commissions Timothy

The apostle Paul gave a charge to his son in the faith, Timothy, over two-thousand years ago:

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare. 1 Timothy 1:18

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! 2 Timothy 4:1-5

Count the Stars

Tonight as part of our history, we are here to give a charge to our new Lead Pastors. We share a common vision—a vision of the stars of the heavens. Those stars represent the vision God gave to our Father Abraham. They remain unchanged since the moment he was led out of his tent into the night sky and asked to count them. Those stars represent the multitudes of people who have and will become the children of faith—the children of the covenant—the seed of Abraham. From one generation to another—this dream goes on and becomes the property and possession of all those who believe!

Like Abraham, we started counting stars years ago and know that you, Pastor Judah and Chelsea, are part of the firstfruits of that vision. Like Moses with Joshua, we inaugurate you tonight and put some of our honor upon you. And, like Moses, we have positioned ourselves on a mountain with our hands stretched out to God as you continue to fight battles for the Lord. Like Jacob we have seen that the Lord has promoted you above your brothers and fulfilled the visions He gave you at age seventeen. He has sent you ahead to preserve life and save many people alive. And now at age thirty, you too, like Joseph will bless the nations out of the storehouses of grain the Lord has helped you gather.

Fulfill the Great Calling on Your Life

Like King Hezekiah, we have prospered and been given much property and cities of refuge and places of provision around this city. These you now inherit and are given charge over. Like Solomon’s father David, we have fought many battles for you Judah and made many preparations, to help you build a great house and help secure your success, your peace and your future influence.

And tonight like the apostle Paul, we charge you to be faithful to the calling upon your life, to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, to let no one despise your youth, to be an example of the believer, to wage a good warfare and preach the Word in season and out of season, to be watchful in all things—endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

A Smith is a Refiner

Judah and Chelsea—you are both “Smiths”, a biblical term for refiners and workers of metals—like the black smith, the silver smith, or the gold smith—skilled in preparing tools for building and weapons for battle. (And therefore your children have a double portion of “smith-ness”).

Your children will be a strength to you and your ministry.

Zion Hugh Smith will be strong in spirit, helping you lay foundations and oversee ministries.

Judah Eliott Wendell Smith will have diverse gifts— with compassion for people and great love for the House of God.

Grace Rene Smith will bring both grace and peace to your house and the House of the Lord. She will joyfully lead God’s people and many young people into His presence and purposes and bring great joy to your lives.

You will be both supported and refreshed by your children.

Judah you have been more than a natural son to us, you have been a true son in the faith, like Timothy to the Apostle Paul.

Anointed by the Holy Spirit

This decision to inaugurate you as the next Lead Pastor of this Church has not been made based on flesh and blood as the Lord is our witness. And to those who are concerned about age or maturity we remind them of a thirty year old prophet from Nazareth who led a small group of twenty somethings in a spiritual revolution that changed the world.

No, this selection has been made by the hand of God and by the obvious anointing of the Holy Spirit upon your life and in the perfect timing of God. Tonight, we simply confirm what the Lord has done. And all the people said “Amen!”

You have been found faithful as a Son in this House and you will abound with many blessings. You have been faithful in little things, faithful in material things and faithful in that which is another’s. Now you are being entrusted with true riches and that which is your own. You will be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; your faith will become effective by the acknowledging of every good thing that is in you in Christ; you will diligently follow the things you have seen and heard from us among many witnesses; and you will find faithful and capable men and women who will in turn be mentored by you to equip countless others.
