What Every Pastor Needs to Know (Part 4) – Church Government

Church Government

25 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:25 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand 27 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:25-27 (NKJV)

We don’t need a church constitution or by-laws or legal papers until there is a war.  When a church split threatens, when a crisis occurs, when a minister falls or when a leader dies; this is when the government and structure of the Church becomes so important.

Every Pastor needs to make certain that the government and structure of the church is both biblically and legally sound.  This unseen foundation is like the underpinnings of a great skyscraper.  It is not meant to be seen or admired.  It is meant to hold the building steady in the storm, the earthquake and the fire.

The early church was overseen by elders, pastors and apostles.  It was served by deacons and laborers in the harvest of souls.  When Paul writes to the Philippian church he mentions “the saints, bishops and deacons”.  God has appointed leaders and overseers for every church.  It is not a democracy, nor is it a dictatorship.  It is His “church” and He is building it.  And the gates of hell cannot prevail against it, if He builds it, and if it is built the way He intends.

Every church must have a set man who God called to start and the lead the church.  And every church should also have elders- mature overseers who assist that man or woman in fulfilling the vision God gave.  And then deacons are there to serve and provide ministries of helps to support the Pastor and facilitate the accomplishment of the vision.  Each of us should be careful how we build on the foundation of the apostles and prophets and of Jesus Christ Himself.

10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 (NKJV)
